| Working towards an IGP (indication of a protected geographical zone : a quality label awarded by the national labels committee) The origins : The plains of Chateauneuf, punctuated by sandstone terraces are stony with poor soils allowing only subsistence farming. However in 1880. the arrival of the irrigation water from the Bourne Canal enabled the cultivation of peech trees on a large scale. The history of the peach is hundreds of years' old in the district. The area of Brignon dates back to the XV century; its name signifies peach with smooth skin, the area of the peach trees confirms the presence of the fruit in the XVI century. |

| The development of the cultivation of peach trees was interrupted by the second world war but picked up again on an even larger scale after 1950. Today more than 1,500 hectares are devoted to them. The area of Chateauneuf represents a production of around 40,000 tonnes which is 10% of the French production. |

This has enabled the Association for the promotion of Chateauneuf peaches set down criterium of quality; already a certificate of conformity received a favourable opinion from the national labels commission and we hope to obtain an IGP (indication of a protected geographical zone).
